My name is Annette De Modena, and I’m asking for your support in the June 5th, 2012, primary for District 1 Supervisor.

Always a resident of District 1, my life continues to be enriched by the friendly, caring, and generous people I’ve met, whether in District 1 or Humboldt County at large. In 1986, I was hired as a substitute for Eureka City Schools; and the rest, they say, is history. Twenty-four years after service to my students, their parents, and my school district, I retired. One of the most special times of my life was celebrating with my colleagues and friends my Excellence in Teaching Award from Humboldt County Office of Education. For many reasons, making this county my home has been one of the best decisions of my life.

I believe deeply in our community and the quality of life it affords us all. I also believe in dedicated public service. After retiring from teaching I wanted to quickly involve myself once again in service to my community. I served a year on the Grand Jury and served as co-chair for some of the most important reports to come out of the Grand Jury 2010-2011, which included the Cutten-Ridgewood Project report. Good housing is important to all of us who live in this county. Having it done according to established policies and with respect to its residents is of the utmost importance to me and the betterment of our community.

Many families in this district are struggling to find jobs that pay a living wage and have all but given up hope of owning their own home in our area. It does not have to be this way; thus, I am asking for your support for 1st District Supervisor. In return, I will focus on policies that:

  • Create living-wage employment with benefits.
  • Continue with the establishment of the foundation for affordable housing.
  • Build a sustainable quality of life, including protecting the natural beauty of our county and its accessibility for current and future residents.
  • Work to improve our county road and trail systems.
  • Work to improve our water and waste water infrastructure.
  • Improve fire and police protection, especially in rural areas.

It is my promise that your voice will be heard and that I will work for you and our community, building without destroying, and strengthening without compromising the quality of life we all enjoy. With your help we can move Humboldt County forward together. I invite you to join with the hundreds of families and businesses who have already signed on to help with my campaign.
